When I sleep, I dream of a sky without stars and still, black water. Behind the wind, there is the Howling. I am caught up in it, no more able to resist than a dry leaf can stand against a hurricane. I am a ship on the sea of infinity, riding the gale of Death's threshing blade. It is the call of the abyss, and when I wake up she remains with me, drawing me towards herself.

–A worshiper of Sanna describing her, Song of Sanna

Sanna was one of the more powerful gods that helped in the creation and maintenance of reality. She was subjugated by the Scarlet King during the latter's conquest of the Darkness Below.

Description[]

In Dust and Blood, she has been called the wisest and most beautiful of all the gods, it has also been stated that her goodness would be mourned, suggesting she was a type of heroic figure. In Tears and Bone, she was described as beautiful as her wisdom which she used to defend her people. According to one of her grandchildren Chòndu Baro'ang, Sanna wasn't truly benevolent, but she was just and fair, and if she were wronged her fury would be traumatizing and devastating. In Dread Conspiracy, she was shown to dearly love her daughters and held a deep-seated hatred for the Scarlet King, wishing to massacre him for what he did to her.

She was instrumental in the working of the cosmos, destroying and recycling near-dead universes, and helped in renewing the multiverse. Sanna was responsible for the destruction of the decaying First Hytoth which led to the creation of improved Second Hytoth. She was considered to be far more powerful than the Elders and the Scarlet King, being the holder of the Black Crown which, besides helping her in the renewing cycle of the multiverse, was also a symbol of her authority. Like her fellow gods Sanna could manifest herself in various forms which acted independently of each other and gave rise to the myths of several unrelated deities from across the world's mythologies. Her forms included: a woman clothed with the night and wearing a black crown with seven stars and accompanied by a child; a veiled woman seated on a throne with a black hole above her head; dead or dying woman in a body of water with pallid skin and black hair; and a bloodied pregnant woman with the head of an octopus and ten arms while carrying a spear and accompanied by winged man o’ war hydrozoans with inside out eyes.

Sanna became the central figure of the religion of Abyssopelagism, and gained some popularity in ancient Mexico, the Haida Nation, in which she was worshiped alongside Ama Kubeya and Brothers Death, and the pocket dimension of Anxeqaamat.[1] The largest group professing to her religion was the BASALT GORGON mystery cult which practiced ritual ablution, meditation through sensory deprivation, human sacrifice of the Scarlet King's servants, and exorcism. They have also their own holy writings such as the Scriptures of the Depths, and appear to have a good relationship with the Church of the Second Hytoth.[1]

History[]

Dust and Blood[]

Sanna was one of the gods instrumental in planting the Tree of Knowledge, giving rise to the multiverse, before setting residence in the Darkness Below. Of the gods Khahrahk had subjugated, Sanna had not remained in the King’s realm willingly, but her escape had been prevented by Jeser's betrayal. She refused to obey the king and delivered unrecoverable injuries to him. However, Khahrahk used his treachery to subdue her, but not her soul, and for this goodness she was mourned.

With the war on creation declared, Khahrahk took Sanna by force, and laid with her for seven days and seven nights, until she was broken beneath the King. When this was completed, he rose in her blood, and was from then on known as the Scarlet King.

Seven children were born of Sanna, seven daughters of the Scarlet King emerging from her broken womb. The King saw this, and took them by force to be his brides. Upon the seven brides the King put seven seals, so that they might never die as Sanna had died. With them, the King gave rise to seven ranks of abominations, seven orders of Leviathans, who became his most beloved servants, who march at the front of his war.

Despite her demise, Sanna still dreamt and could manifest her forms to aid her children and worshipers in the long battle against the Scarlet King and his servants. Her main form rested deep in the cold waters beneath an iceberg in a distant little planet in a undiscovered star system. There she silently lamented the state she was left in and wished to exact revenge on the Scarlet King. Nobody visited her in this world and assured her that they would provide her the means to bring down the Scarlet King, that being Isabel Helga Anastasia Parvati Wondertainment V who was the manifestation of the fire of creation.[2]

Tears and Bone[]

Sanna was a kind figure originating from the domain of Isarrataitsoq. On the day of the Harvest Masquerade held by the Fae goddess Queen Mab, Sanna arrived as a delegate, bringing baskets of furs and fine goods for the evil Queen, and promised to bring many more if they were to form an alliance. During the banquet, most of the attendants became kind to the Horned King's personal and mistreated slave the Scarlet Fool, especially Sanna, despite his wretched ugly appearance, causing the Fool to fall in love with her.

The Horned King then invited the Fool to freely insult all of the gathered monarchs in front of everyone without the risk of punishment. The Scarlet Fool eagerly did so, insulting each and every single one of them, except for Sanna as he only saw her kindness and couldn't bring himself to speak ill of her.

Unbeknownst to most of the attendants, Sanna wasn't actually that kind of a figure, and conspired with the Horned King to publicly humiliate and torture the Fool. While everyone was distracted by the festivity, Sanna sneakily stole Mab's emerald gem from her crown and handed it to the King who in turn gave it to the Fool, telling him to give it to Sanna as a sign of love. The unsuspecting Fool did so, but as he tried to give the gem to Sanna, Mab who sat next to her noticed that it was her gem and became enraged. She struck out at him and sought to execute him in that moment, but was prevented by Sanna, leading to the Horned King's Ambassador suggesting to instead punish the Fool by forcing him to eat all of the leftover bones before the Masquerade ended, else he would be killed. The Fool, despite all of the pain he experienced, was able to accomplish the task, while all of the gatherers mocked him, but from then on he planned to take revenge on everyone who had wronged him.

Trivia[]

  • Sanna is a Scandinavian female name, being the short form of Susanna that is in turn a Greek version of a Hebrew name meaning "lily".
  • Sanna was inspired from the goddess Sedna from the Inuit mythology. She also drew some inspiration from Cthulhu.
  • In SCP: Confinement, Sanna is the goddess in control of SCP-1836, though the two characters sharing the same name is most likely coincidental since both of them were based on the mythological Sedna.
